Israel Attacks Flotilla, Shoots Themselves in Foot

— Filed under: Breaking News, Politics & Government

In a development which is somehow both surprising and not surprising at the same time, the Israeli military has attacked the flotilla of aid ships that was heading from Turkey to Gaza. Anywhere from 10 to 19 civilians have been killed, with many dozens more injured.

After appearing remorseful at first, Israel has now taken a very defensive stance, claiming that its commandos were attacked and possibly even fired upon. Of course the activists claim to be the true victims of aggression, with Greta Berlin, one of the organizers, saying by telephone:

"They can spin it any way they want. We're the civilians, and they are the military."

and on Israel Radio:

"Something happened to your country to make it think it is all right [to shoot civilians]."

With international outrage and condemnation now spreading fast and furious around the globe, and political fallout soon to follow, one has to wonder: what the heck was Israel thinking? They had to know that commandos rappelling from helicopters onto hostile ships would face attack. And as Neal Ungerleider at True/Slant points out:

"There are other ways of stopping ships other than by raids with small groups of naval commandos who can easily lose their cool and open fire."

So why did they do exactly that? Marwan Bishara at Al Jazeera wonders:

"A cold cost and benefit analysis of the Israeli operation shows no particular benefit - security or otherwise - but potential major losses."

In other words, Israel had a lot to lose and very little to gain by sending the military to attack the flotilla.

And lose they did. Israel has blundered into a massive PR debacle, and one has to wonder how they could have made such a blockheaded move - an act of aggression which might some day be a prosecutable crime at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, according to a proposal currently under consideration.

Always on the defensive

Comparing Nations to Individuals doesn't always work, but that's how I think about these things. Of course Israel has suffered terrible abuse in this world. But what happens to victims if they don't forgive? What happens if a victim lives "on guard?" Fear can cause an evolution from wise self-protection and sensible boundaries, to isolation and aggressiveness. The victim becomes the criminal. Many Israelis have forgiven and become open, but it appears that the Nation as a whole is still overwhelmed by fear.

Israel has prepared it's end

Israel has prepared it's end with this move. Just 3 hours before the raid Turkish Navy's headquarter was attacked in Mediterranean Sea and 6 Turkish soldiers were killed. It's highly related with Israel army since they have been training the terrorist organization PKK for almost 30 years. When analyzed it's clear that Israel aimed to kill Turkish volunteers since they attacked Marmara ship with their guns while they just used electric shockers in other ships from other countries.

A decision of war is at the door and the army is alert and started it's preparations for the revenge from Israel army for their sacrificing of civilians. It is enough for greedy Israel. They should also prepare to face a real army soon. I advise good people of Israel to get out their country as fast as they can.

It is my understanding that Israel's army is one of the best in the world. Surely they're not afraid of Turkey's military?

Worlds Best Army,

Yes one of the best army which could not achieve single goal against Hizbullah in Lebanon after 2 months of fighting. IDF really likes to over estimate its own capabilities.

You have right to think that Israel has a good trained army Mr. Smith but they are not capable of fighting against real armies in close combat. Today the volunteers were brought to Turkey and Bulent Yildirim, leader of the Humanitarian Aid mentioned "we thought Israel had a good army before but we saw that they are very weak since they had hard times against us no matter we didn'T have any guns except sticks to protect ourselves".

As you may see the photos Israel army isn't so strong on the contrary they are cowards since they handcuffed the heavy injured volunteers when carrying to hospitals or their jails.

Today Iran and North Korea are being criticized for having nuclear weapons but when it comes to Israel and USA every country becomes mute. Now it's time to make everything even for a better world, otherwise they'll always have the cruelty to threaten other countries which don't have nuclear weapons. (I'm against nuclear weapons for all countries). We also know that USA never found nuclear weapons in Iraq but they sacrificed 2 million humans there. War must always be the last choice.

Good luck to the next flotilla

Israel needs to be taught a lesson and the international community has to get off it's arse and not just site on the sideline while hundreds of innocent people are killed at by the hands of murderous Israelis
