Sex and the City 2 - Not So Sexy

The new "Sex and the City 2" movie released this weekend has come under a hailstorm of criticism from all quarters due to it's supposed racism and cultural insensitivity. Salon has a full write-up of all the offenses, which of course the director and actresses vehemently deny. Despite all the controversy and generally negative reviews (like this one comparing it to a zombie flick), SATC2 is set to have a tremendous opening weekend at the box office.

Even if you're not a fan of Sex and the City and were never planning to see the movie anyway, this sudden outpouring of disgust for a movie is captivating. Have we finally reached that point where the image of obnoxious Americans overseas is no longer hilarious, but instead distasteful?

Even those hardcore fans who had been eagerly awaiting the new movie have found themselves disenchanted by the four's shenanigans in Abu Dhabi. Alice of Alice Writes says:

"...it all declined into a slightly racist farce."

and:

"I wish they’d all just stayed in New York where their personalities actually belong."

"Balk" at The Awl takes a different view altogether, despite being a self-professed "mostly disinterested observer". He suggests that it's the age of the actresses that's the real source of the disgust, and our inability to handle the idea of old(er) women being sexual creatures.

So what's your view? Have you seen the movie? Know someone who has? Let us know your thoughts by posting a comment below.

Haven't seen it, don't want to

Whipped cream is perhaps more likely to melt in Abu Dhabi than in New York City.

What does this mean? I've

What does this mean? I've never heard that saying before.

Fluff

I was just trying to be clever, I guess. I don't find the false self, the persona, interesting. I like movies and TV shows about the true self, the deeper self. Even comedies can treat depict reality.

Never been a fan

Having been subjected to the Sex and City T.V. programme on a basis far regularly than I would like(a life time without it would be bliss). I am of the opinion that it is the usual American rubbish, concocted to send watchers into a deluded brain fuzz, where scripted lines and advertising are pummelled into the mush that currently resides in viewers cranium's. However with the furore that has surrounded the latest in the adventures of the characters that are so very unreal, I am looking forward to watching this movie, which I will be inevitably subjected to at some point in the future. I am hoping that it is offensive as it has been made out to be. Perhaps a little entertainment in an otherwise unremarkable marketing machine? I doubt it though.

I'm afraid that my utter lack

I'm afraid that my utter lack of desire to see this movie renders me unable to form a clear opinion on its merits. I do appreciate your cynical approach however, and the ability to watch the film as a sort of sociological experiment.

Thanks for the mention of my blog! It seems that The Telegraph agree with us... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/7764652/Sex-and-the-Ci...

Don't ya think...

...that "Sex and the City" is a bit like that reality show "Survivors?" They both have scheming, manipulation, friendships that are not real friendships, excruciating efforts to give noble meaning to the meaningless. They both pretend that they are operating in the realm of Real Life.

reallife

Don't say it's 'not real' too loud. You might really do some damage to the vulnerable psyche of todays media saturated youth. I said 'Hip Hop makes you stupid' once. Lost a few friends but still stick by that.

Hip-hop makes you stupid.

I still quote you on this one, never a truer word has passed those lips of yours.

Can't say I agree 100% that

Can't say I agree 100% that hip hop makes you stupid.... but in some ways it (the music genre) certainly needs to grow up. But making a blanket statement that "it makes you stupid" (chicken and egg anyway) ignores the conscious hip hop movement and the millions of lines of extrememly intelligent lyrics.

Hip-hop listeners.

Phlegm (love the moniker), in response to your comments, perhaps not the musicians themselves are stupid, at least not all of them. Perhaps it could contribute to the dumbing down of society, however that would not have made an easily remembered, off-the-cuff, intended to offend comment. I decided to search Google, in response to this and came up with the following link, which is obviously just another opinion, but pretty interesting reading all the same. Enjoy. http://ughworld.blogspot.com/2006/02/how-hip-hop-makes-you-stupid.html

We're getting off topic.

We're getting off topic. Let's continue the hip hop topic at the following URL and leave the rest of this thread about Sex and the City:

meh

I have tried to write something constructive about this for the last five minutes and all i seem to come out with is a load of profanity. I'll leave it at that.

Seize the skull!
