Why Drugs Should Be Legal (Except Heroin)
Wednesday, 7 Jul 2010 — Contributed by timedesign
I have a close friend. He smoked his first joint at 15, in his late teens he experimented with Acid and Speed, at university he took E’s and Coke at the weekend and in his adulthood he… is a respectable professional who pays his taxes, enjoys gardening and contemporary art.
If at anytime over the last fifteen or so years he had been unfortunate enough to be arrested for possession of these, he certainly would not have the job he has now and may have gone to prison. There is a lot of conjecture about how to reduce drug-related crime.
Well here’s an idea: stop arresting people for it.
At the moment hundreds of thousands of people are languishing in prison because of possession of drugs, these people are not criminals, they are made criminals by a hopelessly unjust system.
Legalising drugs would have many benefits.
Currently, according to a 2003 UN report the global drug trade generated an estimated US$321.6 billion that year. Because this industry is unregulated this money goes into the hands of unscrupulous distributors (such as the Taliban, or Mexican drug cartels) when it could go into the coffers of democratically elected governments. It is no coincidence that the power of the American Mafia was at a zenith at the time of Prohibition.
Prohibition then (as now) has been proven to not work. I can go into any club in my hometown and buy drugs. If it is blatantly not working, shouldn’t we look for an alternative?
Currently, if people want to buy drugs they have to come into contact with criminals. Where would you prefer to buy a bag of dope? Your local pharmacy, or some guy in a pub cark park? Perversely, this perpetuates the link between drugs and poverty. The middle-classes venture into poor neighbourhoods to look for drugs and (as Adam Smith would agree) create a market and jobs in places where there are few prospects.
The legalisation and nationalisation of the drugs trade would mean governments would be able to tax and regulate the strength and purity of drugs. The majority of drug-related deaths occur because something else has been mixed into it, and the tax dollars could finance drug education and rehabilitation projects.
Lastly, the real absurdity of the current situation is that the laws regarding drug use are made by people who proudly boast of their ignorance of drugs. Try walking into your local house of elected officials and asking how many people have snorted a line or popped a pill. Imagine people devising the rules for the next Football World Cup who knew the velocity of a football, how much players perspire or run in 90 minutes, the composition of the player’s diet and uniforms, but had never watched a game of football. This is the situation we have now.
I have excluded heroine from this because it’s a horrible, dirty drug that people wouldn’t use if they had access to reasonably priced coke or acid. And I don’t really like gardening.

what about those people who
what about those people who hurt themselves or other ppl when they're high?
People who hurt People
people who hurt people are Usually drunk, or coming off of some HARD drugs, which are scarce because they are illegal and EXpensive. but marijuana ( if legal ) is both NOT a hard drug, nor expensive per use as are Alcohol and Hard Drugs. GET REAL!
Alright mate! Sounds like you
Alright mate! Sounds like you could use a toke yourself. Do you wanna talk about it?
Meth
I'd add Meth to the 'keep it illegal' list...that stuff really messes people up, and fast.
Governmental obligation
And what of those people who have expressed a clear desire to quit drugs, but have found themselves unable due to addiction? Does the government not have an obligation to protect its citizens from mind-altering and addictive substances?
I would also add crack to the list of "dirty" drugs that shouldn't be legalized.
legalize it
I believe the only drug that should be legalized is Marijuana. Its a plant and not processed to the point other illegal drugs are. All the other drugs including cocaine and E, do have really bad side effects. Jailing someone for small amounts of these drugs or prosecuting a casual user is absurd though and partly why the USA has the worlds biggest prison population.
Having said that though there is no easy solution, Even legal alcohol destroys people's lives all the time as well as prescription drugs. Its the downfall of the modern world, but simply legalizing the harder srugs would likely lead to more widespread use which cannot be a good thing.
Processed Maijuana
I kind of agree with you here, but even Marijuana is processed beyond its original for to produce Hashish and Oil, that have no resemblance to the original plant, and therefore is taken advantage of. Anything that is illegal is going to exploited, and watered down for those selling it to make a profit. Still I am far from straight edge. Go the Green Party (NZ)
I personally think that it
I personally think that it should STAY illegal, BUT, instead of a prison sentence, a mere confiscation should do.
California against pot legalization
Legislation aimed at legalizing marijuana in California (arguably one of the more liberal and pot-friendly states in the US) is likely to FAIL.

Arnie....
has Arnie got anything to do with this? For a muscled mug he sure is catching on to the Political way of life... Take steroids to bulk up...he was using the legal ones...of course. Appear in "Anti-Drugs" Campaign, then run for Governor, get outed as a dope smoker, kiss a little George behind, and then have to have his plane perform an emergency landing due to smoking goodness knows what (just for the record, I mad the last bit up.....I Don't know what he was smoking".
In the words of the Big man himself...." "[Marijuana] is not a drug. It's a leaf."........hmmm. Wise words!
On the way out
Arnie is on his way out. He has pissed off both Republicans and Democrats alike. I've read some articles that suggest he's unlikely to get re-elected.
Bye Bye Arnie
Oh do tell. A little political gossip would be good for the soul today. What has he done? Been caught groping one too many backsides?
Head of the Royal College of Physicians wants drugs legalised.
This is a really interesting article with probably one of the most respected and knowledgeable Physicians stating that he believes the current system of prohibition in England is counter productive, and requesting the system be reviewed. He has joined a list of experts requesting this review. The powers that be have already stated that they believe this is not the case. Why hire a expert, when we can pay more for a muppet in a suit to spout forth his opinion, probably based on theories that will ensure his political survival, and have no basis in reality. Politicians. Not Funny. Ever.

Drug Legalization
You might be surprised to hear me say that I work as a caregiver to addiction recovery patients and I am for decriminalizing drugs. I also thing that if we did that, we would need better treatment for everyone.
Seize the skull!
