Do you like good music?
Fri, 28 May 2010 - 1:27am
Hey there, so what kind of music do you like? What's playing on your iPod right now? I've been listening to a lot of Mogwai recently, and also starting to get into Vampire Weekend. I saw "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" recently, and got exposed to a bunch of new bands that way.
So what do ya like?

Cool man, I'll check that
Cool man, I'll check that website out. You gotta see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, great flick, great music, nice story. A bit of a cult hit already, in fact.
What's breakbeat? Can you give an example of an artist?

Breakbeat
Goodness, well Plump DJ's and The Drummatic Twins are my favourites.....Breakbeat is a type of Techno that orinally came a out before DNB, but died out. It made a comeback about 7 years ago...think funky disco with bass. Lots of shifting tempo through the song.
I will post my favourite songs here over the next couple of days.

Breakbeat's real fukin sexy!
Breakbeats are mean. Nice Bass lines, funky as two steps, quite a bit of melody and sexy voices. I highly recommend you youtube a band called Shapeshifter they are from my country New Zealand. Search 'Shapeshifter' song 'Electric Dream' Very very cool! Also you tube State of Mind, The Upbeats, Mt Eden Dubstep.

Deep Hard and Funky
I'd say Breaks is probably the most all encompassing genre of electronic music. It takes elements from everywhere and really has no defined 'set' sound to it. You can hear rock to reggae/dub to classical all in a 1 hour set. There is more remixed music around than original material.

Music I have recently discovered
1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGoB2cEyFj0
By French band Phoenix from their album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix".
Very mellow dance like beats with a lovely male vocal over the top.
2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldL3nYmUpAk
By Fuck Buttons, from their second Album "Tarot Sport".
this is an instrumental like I have never heard before, I would describe it as good driving music, but that is my opinion only. the Lisbon Maru was a Japanese Troop transport ship that was sunk off the coast of Shanghai in 1942. Codehunters have made an Anime film of the same name.
3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFHNH6059wE
"It's a pity" by Tanya Stephens.
Tanya Stephens is possibly one of the most influential reggae singers of the '90's. She has a very distinctive Jamaican style, without being over the top and ruining the song. A really nice anti-love song of sorts.
4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46xKI9ROJaE
Italian electroclash outfit have remixed this lovely little tune by Roisin Murphy. Crookers are a little hit and miss in my opinion, but this tune shows off the vocalists talents, and asks questions of all of the big female vocalists playing around trying to improve their sales. Talent, that's the difference.
5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2BczPaPR-I
Ever a favourite of mine, due to seeing them play countless times in Wellington, Fat Fredddy's have produced another epic track that covers a range of musical genres. if you have never heard their music I urge you to check them out on Youtube. They are always a firm favourite at music festivals, and if you listen to the link above, plus Wandering Eye, Seconds and Midnight Marauders, I am sure you will see why. Enjoy.
6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAP9qFHj6jE
Nina has long been a stable of my musical diet, but I have only recently discovered this Randy Newman cover, which has featured on the T.V. show "The Wire". Very mellow, near reggae sounds with a little jazz strings. Beautiful.
7. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7-5NPI63IY
Death in Vegas do a very chilled tune, with subtle female vocals. Very good for a relaxing day.
8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CpWOo7ODzg
Three legendary artists coming together. DJ Shadow and Root Manuva came together to produce "GDMFSOB", which is a new twist on both of their styles, and remixed by U.N.K.L.E. Be warned occasional rude word in the lyrics, but well worth a listen.
9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIGkygiv8RA
A Woman, A Lover, A Friend. By Jackie Wilson, also performed by Otis Redding. Absolute classic. No more need be said. Just discovered this Jackie Wilson version.
10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqIN-sgoZCs
Another New Zealand band that have become very dear to me. This is a DNB track, but is lighter than your average Goldie/Nosia style. Really nice vocal over the top.

Have heard a few Fat Freddy's
Have heard a few Fat Freddy's songs and quite liked them. Also have a couple of Fuck Buttons tracks in my iTunes (I believe Mogwai remixed some of their tracks). I'll try to check the others out very soon - thanks for the suggestions!

Another great radio station
I'll need to check out www.95bfm.com.
Another station that I absolutely love for their eclectic mix of genres and artists is kexp. They're based out of Seattle, and they stream online at www.kexp.org. They also offer free "song of the day" podcasts and live performances. This weekend they're sponsoring the annual Sasquatch Music Festival. Vampire Weekend, The Mountain Goats, Public Enemy, and Mumford & Sons happen to be some of the bands playing, but there are so many other artists. Oh, to be back in Seattle to go to Sasquatch. *sigh*

The songs i didn't skip
I have just changed all of the music on my MP3 player, due to it only holding 2Gb of information. Below are links to some of the songs I didn't skip through, which I tend to do, due to having the attention span of a goldfish. I have tried to provide information on the artist, which you can link to via the artist's name, and the track itself. Enjoy.

2. Deadmau5 - Hi Friend
3. DJ Pinch & Moving Ninja - False Friend
4. Laidback Luke & Diplo - hey!

7. Scuba - Klinik

Little bit of info
Andy Korg is an Austrian music producer that usually plays around with the more musical, vocal side of Breaks and House. He also has another very big track called 'I Want You' on Ninja Tune, which has been remixed a few times. I will post my favourite here in the near future.D
Deadmau5 is a gentleman by the name of Joel Zimmerman, who hails from Canada. He is predominantly a House producer, and to be honest a lot of his stuff is a little light for my taste. I really like the Hi Friend track, probably due to being a remix, and making it a little funkier than his usual fare.
Dj Pinch is a good old Bristolian (I LOVE music from Bristol) who produces Dubstep with flavours incorporating reggae and world music. He is a new favourite of mine, and I hope to post some more of his goodness here in the future.
Laidback Luke is a House Producer who has been kicking around for around 14 years now. He has released a bevy of singles including one with John Legend.
Diplo is an American producer who seems to have his fingers in as many pies as possible. He runs a music club, has his own record company, dates MIA, and has recently become a favourite of large musical acts for remixes and production, such as Madonna, Kanye West and Maroon 5. He also used to work as a School Teacher (there is hope for me yet!).

Lately
I've been jumping between many different styles of music. Most recently this has ranged from: Tricky, post hardcore the likes of Helmet and Rage Against the Machine, some Gorillaz, Roky Erickson is some great stuff, Lou Reed, and sort of pirate rockabilly in the form of The Wages of Sin, which is an old co-workers band.
IT purely depends on my mood...I often just put old movie or video game orchestral scores on while I work.

VG Music isn't just the bleepy bop-bop you'd expect, games like Final Fantasy VI have soundtracks that wouldn't sound out of place among the likes of Mozart and Bach.

I would highly recommend purchasing a copy of the album "I am new here" by Gil Scott Heron. Its a really emotional heart-felt album which feels like a story, has spoken word tracks and is all in all beautiful poetry. Highly recommended.
